Hernia Repair during Robotic Prostatectomy

Dr. Sanjay Razdan, a global leader in Robotic Surgery has just released a new video discussing results from a featured study in the World Journal of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery in March 2019. The results are based on over 6 years of experience.

What is an inguinal hernia?

Inguinal hernias are detected in approximately 33% of Radical Robotic Prostatectomies either pre or intraoperatively.

A hernia is condition where soft tissue can protrude or bulge through a compromised or weak area in the muscles of the abdominal wall.

The soft tissue is usually part of the intestines. The bulge can be easily seen and felt.  Many times the patient is unaware of the hernia, especially if the patient is obese.  Typical symptoms of a hernia are pain, usually when a patient coughs, lifts a heavy object or bends down. If the hernia is painful and getting larger, surgery performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr. Razdan can repair it.

Why Robotic Hernia repair?

Hernia surgery has been performed for decades however a Robotic Hernia surgery can be superior because it allows the surgeon greater mobility and visualization near critical structures vs an open or even a laparoscopic repair. “An experienced surgeon can precisely suture without a large incision and without going through muscle,” says Dr. Razdan.”A Robotic Surgery done well will result in much less pain, and far less complications versus traditional methods.”

What were the results of the study?

The study demonstrates the feasibility and advisability of repairing most inguinal hernias uncovered during Robotic Prostatectomy as it is without any significant alteration of peri-operative morbidity, is associated with excellent post-operative outcomes, and eliminates the need for a second surgical procedures. “It only adds 6-10 minutes to the Robotic Prostatectomy, and the results have been outstanding. Patients are thankful they can have the problem fixed and avoid a second surgery”.

Almost 30% of all males will suffer from an Inguinal Hernia at some point in their lives. If you have been diagnosed with an Inguinal Hernia, contact Dr. Razdan at 305-251-8650 and visit the website to hear from hundreds of other patients.
